A note of thanks to Alan Johnson

My close friend and colleague Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP has announced that he will not stand for re-election in the upcoming June election.

Alan was the first person to contact me when I was selected as the candidate in East Hull in 2008. We have worked closely on a number of issues, most importantly on bringing Siemens to Hull as well as backing the City of Culture bid.

Alan has been a constant source of support in my time in Parliament, providing me with valuable insight and experience.

Next month will see Alan mark 20 years since that momentous day that Labour won a landslide in 1997 when Alan entered the House of Commons. The House of Commons has benefitted greatly from Alan’s thoughtful approach to politics and his dogged determination to do right by the people of West Hull and Hessle.

Alan has had a long and distinguished career in Parliament and has achieved more than most. The Labour Party in government was the better for Alan’s expertise, with Alan reaching the dizzying heights of Home Secretary from humble beginnings as a postman.

Hull owes Alan a debt of gratitude and I for one will be grateful for the service that he has given the city over the past 20 years.
